The most striking feature of St Mary's is the crossing tower (27m) copied from the one in Wells Cathedral. The 15C Perpendicular Gothic building originally only had a central nave; side aisles were added in the 16C and the galleries above the nave ..

In true Somerset tradition, this splendid medieval church has a slender tower built of the red and golden Ham Hill stone. The bosses and angels carved in the roofwork are typical examples of local craftmanship.

This 14-15C church (except the north arcade and aisle) features a 37-m tower of Quantock red sandstone with Ham stone decoration.

Dating from the 11-12C, it is well known for being the property of the bishops of Winchester. During the Civil War, Taunton and its castle were under siege on three occasions. Part of it now houses the Somerset County Museum .
