An exuberant din of neighborhood pizza lovers rocks the rafters at Patxi's, the Hayes Valley outpost of the Palo Alto original. Exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and bright paintings from a nearby gallery give this location a distinctly San Francisco feel, though many of the pies actually nod to Chicago. While Patxi's does offer cracker-crisp cornmeal pies for thin-crust devotees, deep dish is the main draw here. Expect to wait half an hour or more for that flakey-buttery, two-inch-deep sensation stuffed with gooey cheese; the "Favorite" is heavily heaped with pepperoni, mushrooms, and black olives. Salads and pizzas by the slice play well to the loyal lunch crowd, while half-baked take-home pies are a smart reward at the end of a long day.
