: The Michelin guide review
Visitors to this museum on the site of the famous Rancho La Brea Tar Pits can learn about Los Angeles as it was between 10,000 and 40,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when animals such as saber-toothed cats and mammoths roamed the region. Funded by George C. Page, a Nebraska native who made his fortune shipping gift baskets of dried California fruit nationwide, the museum showcases skeletons reconstructed from more than four million bones of 390 animal species-including more than 3,000 dire wolves-found at the adjacent pits. In a glass-windowed paleontology laboratory, scientists and volunteers are visible at work, cleaning and examining bones, and outside are life-size replicas of Ice Age mammals.
