While Chez Panisse remains a Berkeley big ticket, don't underestimate this lively tapas bar next door with all the Californian influence, indie soul, and simple cooking with Alice Waters alums running the show. Amusingly, the eatery is named for filmmaker Marcel Pagnol's character César, a café owner who sets about reuniting the estranged family of Honoré Panisse. Spanish-style tapas may begin withpatatas rellenas, potatoes stuffed with spicy chorizo and bathed inqueso Urgelia, continuing with fresh fish or beefa la plancha, orbocadillos. The seasonal paella may be slow to develop but is rich in reward.
