Before the imperial decree of 1787 forbidding burials in urban areas, the cemetery - or rather, cemeteries - assembled over several hectares of land to the west of Vinohrady go back to the end of the Great Plague of 1680. The tombs of famous figures from Czech history are gathered around St Roch Church (1682), from the lexicographer Jose Jungmann to the student Ian Palach, and Franz Kafka in the new Jewish cemetery.
