Alfons Mucha (b.1895) made his name in Paris with his posters for Sarah Bernhardt. He worked in the studios of both Rodin and Gaugin but preferred more practical expressions of his art and became one of the masters of Art Nouveau. This, however, he abandoned upon his return to Prague to concentrate on work such as a series of 20 paintings on the Slave Trade, stained-glass windows for St Guy's Cathedral, decorations of the Municipal Building, and even engravings for banknotes!
