Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes star : The Michelin guide review

Largely overlooked by tourists, this church (built between 1624 and 1631) is nonetheless a Baroque jewel. Originally called San Antonio de los Portugueses (having initially served the Portuguese community, Portugal being part of Spain at that time), it changed its name in 1689 to welcome German worshippers. The building was largely designed by a Jesuit architect, but the Madrid Baroque facade is the work of Juan Gómez de Mora. In 1886 it was remodelled in the neo-Gothic style.
