In the Middle Ages, Ciutadella, (“the Citadel”) then capital of Menorca, was surrounded by ramparts. Its walls were demolished in 1873, but their layout can still be seen in the avenues which surround the old town. The fortified aspect of the town is clearly visible from the port.
