The busiest street in the El Born district is a perfect illustration of the wealth of the merchant families who once lived here. In the 13C and 14C, Barcelona’s fleet dominated Mediterranean commercial traffic between the Balearics, Sicily and Italy. Merchants formed a powerful oligarchy which existed for many centuries in the city and was keen to highlight its success. The Carrer Montcada, named after one of Barcelona’s most powerful families, became a showcase for this display of wealth.
