Roskilde, the old capital of Denmark, lies at the head of a long, narrow fjord. The town was founded by the Viking Harald Bluetooth, before becoming the seat of a powerful bishopric, whose most famous bishop was Absalon, the founder of Copenhagen. The city lost its political significance after the capital was transferred in 1417, but continued to be the burial place of Danish monarchs.
