Christian IV had this islet fortified in 1618: Christianshavn was born. Having acted as a preliminary protection for the city and an active port with a canal cutting right through it, the district has preserved its traditional characteristics and brightly coloured houses. The 17C Nordic baroque-style Church of Our Saviour,has a superb view over the city and sea from the top of its steeple. You get up there using a spiral staircase of 400 steps that run outside of the tower.
