The Count of Mercy built a citadel on the right bank of the River Bega, of which all that remains today is a bastion. The streets and squares laid out within its walls now form the historic centre, best explored starting from the river frontage of the pleasant Iosefin district, which retains numerous fine private residences and villas often set in gardens, notably on the little streets lying behind Splaiul Tudor Vladimirescu.
