Santa Maria church : The Michelin guide review

The south door has an abundance of statues, including one of Henry the Navigator. The interior is outstanding, in particular the vault which surprisingly withstood the 1755 earthquake and the slender architectural lines of the pillars of the nave. Various styles can be seen in the church: Baroque (transept crossing), classical (choir stalls) and neo-Manueline (the tombs of Vasco de Gama and de Camões). The cloister is a masterpiece of Manueline art.
