Museu Nacional dos Coches
: The Michelin guide review
The Carriage Museum, founded by Queen Amelia in 1904, has a splendid collection of carriages, the oldest of which is the magnificently painted four-wheeler brought to Portugal by Philip II of Spain in the late 16C. Other notable examples include three huge coaches built in Rome in 1716 for Portugal's ambassador extraordinary to Pope Clement XI - veritable masterpieces of Italian baroque - and the coach of Joao V with its beautiful paintwork and sculpture.
