On the slope of a hill on the side of the Tâmega, Amarante is a charming and picturesque village whose old houses have wooden balconies and wrought iron grilles. Well-known for its pastries (lérias, foguetes, papos anjo) and its vinho verde, the town is enlivened each year on the first Saturday in June at the Festival of its patron saint, St Gonzalve, who has the reputation of promoting marriages and fertility.
