Abrantes : The Michelin guide review
In the centre of Portugal, Abrantes occupies an attractive site. The town seems to climb up the side of a hill and dominates the right bank of the Tagus and the Tramagal road, south of the river. It has beautiful panoramic views over the white city. The French troops made their entrance there on 24 November 1807. The city gave itself up without resistance to this handful of unruly, poorly clothed and exhausted men. The French later moved to Lisbon, now abandoned by the royal family.
