Lódz (pronounced “woutch”) is Poland’s second city. Born in the 19C out of the Industrial Revolution, it inspired “The Promised Land”, written by Wladyslaw Reymont and made into a film by Andrzej Wajda. Despite the brick chimneys constantly billowing smoke in the background, its famous Cinema School, museums and numerous venues hosting festivals and events have given the city a pre-eminent position in Polish cultural life.
