The Hague, although robbed of the title of capital of the Netherlands by Amsterdam at the beginning of the 19th Century, is capital of the Zuid-Holland province, and the seat of government and of the Dutch parliament. A diplomatic centre, this is Holland's most elegant and sophisticated city, and also home to the International Court of Justice. Particularly pleasing are its peaceful atmosphere, with its canals, squares and parks. Its open layout makes the Hague feel like one huge village.
