St Anthony's Gate (Waag or St-Anthoniespoort) : The Michelin guide review

Flanked with towers and turrets, this gate dates from 1488. In 1617 the moats around it were filled in and the gate changed in character. From that time butter and cheese were brought here to be weighed before being sold. At one time the octagonal tower housed the "Anatomisch Theater", where demonstrations in dissection were given using the bodies of executed criminals. One such demonstration was immortalised by Rembrandt.
