De Pijp : The Michelin guide review

This 19th Century quarter is in fact an island, linked to the city by 16 bridges. Its name, "the Pipe" may come either from the chimneys of the Heineken brewery, or from the long narrow ditches that used to criss-cross the area. Its busy streets are lined with cafés, restaurants and shops. The inhabitants of the Pijp, who used to be mostly from the labouring classes, now include numerous immigrants from the South, earning it the nick-name of "Amsterdam's Latin Quarter".
