The Vomano Valley skirts the Gran Sasso massif as far as the Adriatic. On its green slopes stand a number of religious edifices including the Abbazzia di S. Maria di Propezzano (13C-14C) and that of S. Clemente al Vomano, originally built in the 9C and reworked several times since. Its 12C portal opens into a wonderfully simple interior, the centrepiece of which is a 12C ciborium, adorned with latticework and carvings in the shape of animals and plants.
