Piazza San Marco star : The Michelin guide review

This extraordinary architectural ensemble is the very embodiment of Venice. Everything here is graceful and beautiful, albeit teeming with pigeons and tourists. This vast trapezoidal space is harmoniously framed by the Procuratie, under the arcades of which are cafés like Florian (1720) and Quadri (1775), and boutiques. The square opens onto the Grand Canal across the lovely Piazzetta.

    Pros

We were in Venice five days and it was like being in a beautiful dream from which I did not have to waken. After three European trips and extensive travel in the U.S. and Canada, it is by far the most fascinating, beautiful place I have been. The lack of vehicular traffic along with the mixture of Eastern and Western architecture, with many buildings being in a somewhat dilapidated state makes it very romantic. Walking anywhere there is great. The ceiling mosaics in the Basilica of San Marco are captivating, and time spent in the Piazza San Marco is unforgettable. Since being there I haven't been able to look at photos of Venice without moaning, I have wanted to return there so badly - I would say so passionately. Now, happily, next year I will do so and this is on my mind constantly. There is no other place like it in the world.
