: The Michelin guide review
Jesus, had just instituted the Eucharist and, at this Last Supper, revealed the betrayal of one of the twelve. This is the precise moment that del Sarto chose to illustrate. The surprise and discussions between the apostles are depicted by questioning glances and attitudes of defiance. Nothing detracts the attention from the centre of the scene. The instant where Jesus, still holding the bread he is to hand to Judas (exceptionally seated on his right, although he is traditionally spurned at the end of the table, with his back to observers) is captured to perfection, as if time has stood still for a moment before a complete change in destiny. The opening in the upper part of the loggia has allowed the painter to distribute the light illuminating the scene and to use warm colours.
