TOURISM
Allied to the Medici and Strozzi dynasties, the Rucellai family owed their very name and fortune to the imporation of lichen (called oricella) which was an effective red dye. Their emblem, a sail billowing in the wind, symbolises maritime trade and features in a frieze on the first floor (as well as on the loggia opposite and at Santa Maria Novella). Their palace is the first building since Antiquity to superimpose the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders on top of each other.
