Travel guide Trieste
Trieste
: The Michelin guide review
The largest port on the Adriatic, bordering Slovenia, only became Italian in 1919. Formerly a Roman colony (Tergeste), it placed itself under Austrian rule in 1382 to escape Venetian domination. The Compagnies d’Orient and du Levant (French trading associations) made Trieste their headquarters in the 18C when it became a free port. The birthplace of the novelist Italo Svevo and poet Umberto Saba is a modern city at the foot of San Giusto hill, where most of its historic buildings are grouped.
