For historians, the town is linked indelibly to Mussolini, who set up a short-lived “Social Republic” here in 1944. For cinema-lovers, it brings to mind Pasolini, whose film created a great outcry at the time. Located on the banks of Lake Garda, Salò proves to be much more tranquil than its reputation would seem to suggest. It enjoyed a period of great splendour when it was chosen as the seat of the Venetian Captain: its 15C Duomo (cathedral) bears witness to this glorious era.
