Ostia Antica star star : The Michelin guide review

Situated at the mouth of the Tiber, at the very spot where Aeneas was said to have landed, Ostia was founded in the 4C BC at a time when Rome had just begun her conquest of the Mediterranean and needed a port near the city. From then on, Ostia’s development was closely linked with that of Rome. From a military port it developed into a centre of trade surrounded by ramparts, then began to decline in the 4C. The port silted up and was only discovered in 1909, when excavations of the site began.
