Travel guide Castel Gandolfo
Castel Gandolfo
: The Michelin guide review
Castel Gandolfo is located on the banks of Lake Albano, which lies within a crater; it is now the Pope's summer residence. The palace, which is not open to the public, has housed an astronomic observatory since the pontificate of Pius XI. It is thought that Castel Gandolfo was built on the site of ancient Alba Longa, the long-standing, powerful rival of Rome in its early days, immortalised by the legendary combat between the Horatii and the Curiatii.
