Basilica of San Vitale star : The Michelin guide review

Consecrated in 547 by Archbishop Maximian, this architectural masterpiece bears witness to the splendid opulence and use of light characteristic of late Antiquity. The richness of its interior decoration is quite breathtaking: marble, beautifully sculpted Byzantine capitals, frescoes and mosaics in the apse. Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora are depicted in the hieratic style typical of Byzantine art. The whole ensemble is simply spectacular and should not be missed.

    Pros

We traveled in Italy for a month when I was majoring in art history in college, so Italy made me crazy. Of literally thousands of artworks that I saw, the mosaics in Ravenna were my favorites. They are so colorful and beautiful, and from an era that most people don't know a lot about, so they are somewhat esoteric. Ravenna is small so it is easy to see everything there. We will return to Italy next year and Ravenna is one of six places that we will definitely visit again.
