Overlooking the lake with which it shares a name, Como was a prosperous town under the Romans. It enjoyed a golden age in the 11C, and was ruled by the Milanese from 1355 onwards. The town was made famous by the masons, builders and sculptors known as maestri comacini who spread the Lombard style of architecture throughout Italy and Europe as early as the 7C.
