Castellammare di Stabia star : The Michelin guide review

Ancient Stabiae was occupied successively by the Oscans, Etruscans, Samnites, and finally the Romans in the 4C BC. In the 1C AD, the town was a popular holiday resort, dotted with luxurious villas and famous for its mineral water. However, Stabiae was wiped out by the eruption of Vesuvius, which covered the town with volcanic ash; Pliny the Elder, who was present at the time, died as a result of asphyxiation. The town has been a busy port renowned for its shipyards since the time of the Bourbons.
