The parish was founded in 1707 and the church, one of the first in Dublin to be built in the Georgian style, was designed by Isaac Wills. The neo-Romanesque west front was added in 1868. The stained glass windows are Victorian; three of them, in the southern aisle, were designed by Wilhelmina Geddes, a member of An Tur Gloine. The bread shelf which can be seen in the chancel was set up in 1723 thanks to a charitable bequest, so that bread could be given to 120 poor families every Sunday.
