Between the sea and a lagoon, Lefkáda Town, capital of the island of Lefkáda (Leucas), has the old-fashioned charm of a provincial town. The time to explore it is at nightfall, when the façades of its coloured houses soften in the glow of the street-lamps, and the crowds - which disappear during the afternoon - return, bringing the paved alleys of the Venetian-style harbour back to life. The many charming churches built by the great local families, with Classical façades, single naves and painted ceilings, are also of Venetian influence.
