The present university, which is remarkable for the purity of its façade, was built from 1837 to 1864 by the Danish architect Chr. von Hansen. With the academy (Akadimía) and the national library (Ethniki Vivliothíki) it forms an architectural set in neoclassical style with elegant although somewhat cold lines. The university is the oldest building in this set of 19C buildings built using white Pentelikos marble.
