Areópoli, capital of the Máni Peninsula, is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area for a day or two. Cross the modern square where the buses pull in, and lose yourself in the streets of the old town which wind past towers and old stone houses with red-tiled roofs. Once past Platía Darkákou with its traditional shops (bakeries), you will see the Taxiárhes Church (18C), with its tall, detached bell-tower. Its outside walls are adorned with carved marble plaques.
