York Castle Museum : The Michelin guide review

The former debtors' prison and women's prison now house a museum of daily life. Kirkgate is the exact reproduction of a Victorian street, with a Hansom cab, named after its designer. The Saxon Coppergate Helmet, found while digging in the Jorvik Centre, is shown here: it is made of iron with copper decorations and dates back to around 750, and was probably worn by a nobleman of Northumbria.
