Travel guide Whitby
Whitby
: The Michelin guide review
At the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby was once a ship-building and whaling centre, and is now a fishing port and seaside resort. The town is divided into a rather modern west side, and an east side steeped in history and overlooked by its ruined abbey. The great explorer Captain James Cook served his seafaring apprenticeship here. Vampire enthusiasts may be interested to know that the first few chapters of Dracula by Bram Stoker are set in Whitby.
