Pottery was made in Stoke well before the time of England's most revered potter, Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795). Kilns dating from around 1300 were discovered at Sneyd Green. The Gladstone Pottery Museum is the only factory that survived, and its original workshops, cobbled yard and distinctive bottle-shaped kilns have been preserved. It was converted into a museum of British pottery around 1960.
