Inverness
: The Michelin guide review
Straddling the outlet of Loch Ness at the northern end of the Great Glen, Inverness is considered the capital of the Highlands. Its position as the hub of communication links makes it the ideal base from which to discover the region. The town's strategic importance gave it a lively history up to the 19C, explaining the lack of earlier buildings (although it is the site of the oldest bagpipe competition!). Construction of the Caledonian Canal and the arrival of the railway gave it new impetus.
