A space enclosed with a fence marks the site of the gallows from which Porteus was hanged in 1736. Some hundred Covenenters were also executed here in the 17C. West Port on the southwest corner is the western approach to the town. Nowadays, many restaurants and pubs line this semi-pedestrianised square. A market is held on the first Sunday of every month from May to September and you can browse local food specialities, crafts and second-hand stalls.
