In its hey-day, jute production in Dundee employed 50 000 people, mainly in the Blackness quarter, one of Scotland's first areas to be industrialised at the end of the 18th C, However Dundee still had a sufficiently country air about it for David Lindsay's factory, established in 1833 to be given the name Verdant Mill. The factory has been turned into an extremely dynamic museum which recounts the history of an activity which was of international importance.
