The Valley of the River Dee, known as Deeside, extends deep into the Grampian Hills. Dotted with castles such as Drum and Crathes, it is home to a wide variety of sites including the architectural masterpiece of Craigievar, Aboyne Park, where Highland Games are held in August, and Balmoral Castle, summer residence of the Royal Family, who generally attend the Braemar Highland Gathering which takes place in September. The tour ends at Linn O'Dee, a famous beauty spot where it is possible to see salmon leaping.
