Travel guide Oakham
Oakham : The Michelin guide review
This elegant little town is once again the administrative centre of England’s smallest county, Rutland, which officially disappeared in the boundary reorganisation of 1974, but was reinstated in 1997. The market square, medieval Butter Cross, school dating back to Tudor times and restored 13C church (surmounted by one of England's oldest weathervanes), form a semi-circle around the castle. The history of this unusual county is explained in the Rutland County Museum.
