Travel guide Northampton
Northampton : The Michelin guide review
A major town in the Middle Ages, nothing remains of its castle (c 1100) where Thomas Becket stood trial in 1164, as Northampton was destroyed by fire in 1675. Defoe described the town that rose from the ashes in the late 17C as "the handsomest and best town in this part of England". Castle remains were obliterated when the railway was built and a new town developed. Three buildings embody these three eras.
