The Tate family has its origin in Liverpool and happily chose to locate a part of the national collection of 20C art here. The Architect James Stirling designed this exhibition hall with an absence of partition walls, just giving the structure an external wall with a cast iron frame. Renovated in this way, The Liverpool Tate Gallery now has as much space as its mother gallery and puts on semi-permanent and temporary exhibitions of its 20C artworks.
