The town of Lewes is made up of several very pleasant streets. The well-preserved High Street is lined by houses made of a variety of materials: flint, stone, brick, timber, stucco and tiles. The delightful Keere Street drops steeply downhill to part of the old town. In Southover High Street is a timber-framed house containing a museum of local history: it has a gallery devoted to the iron industry, which once flourished in the region.
