Travel guide Ely
Ely : The Michelin guide review
Standing on a rise on the banks of the River Ouse dominating the flatlands of the Fens, Ely was once called Elig or Eel Island because of the abundance of eels in the area. It has been a place of worship since the time of St Etheldreda, a Saxon queen who founded a religious community and built an abbey here in the 7C. The town still retains monastic buildings and some medieval houses. In the 17C, Ely was the home of a famous citizen: Oliver Cromwell.
