The Roman Derventio was set on the opposite bank of the Derwent to Derby, one of the five Danelaw towns (with Leicester, Lincoln, Nottingham and Stamford). The city was the most southerly point reached by Bonnie Prince Charlie's army before its retreat to Culloden (1746).
