Travel guide Buxton
Buxton : The Michelin guide review
The Romans discovered Buxton’s warm springs and built baths here in about 79 AD. However, it was not until 1780, when the 5th Duke of Devonshire commissioned John Carr to build the Crescent, that Buxton started to take on the aspect of a spa town such as Bath or Cheltenham. Today, the Crescent, with the nearby Opera House, is still the centre of this small town which boomed with the advent of the railways in the 1860s.
