Once an Augustinian abbey, this 14-15C Perpendicular Gothic building was consecrated as a cathedral church in 1542. It has tall pointed windows, framed by finialled buttresses and pinnacled parapets; the attractive transept crossing tower is crenellated and pinnacled. The Elder Lady Chapel (1210-1220) and East Lady Chapel (1298-1330) are remarkable, the first for its clear simple lines and the second for its profusion of light and colour.
